Okay... this has nothing to do with food. However, while we are on the topic of weddings and time spent preparing for weddings...and love and decorations: Pinata qualifies.
A few of us spent many weeks and a day and several nights making the pinata for the kids at Catherine and Luis' wedding reception.
Here is a step by step guide on how we made a pinata:
We started with a balloon (in this case) and a mixture of flour and water that forms a gooey paste. Use the paste to apply newspaper strips to the balloon.
Allow the gooey strips on the balloon to thoroughly dry before applying paint.
A moment after this moment, the pinata fell and a big hole suddenly busted through. We had to step back a bit and re-apply more gooey strips to cover the hole.
Then repaint....
Catherine and Kirstin look so anguished just after the project fell..
Time passed (as in days) and after several additional layers of gooey paste and newspaper had been applied we filled it with candy and toys.
We then began the re-decoration of the pinata.
Alas! The earth has been saved! And then the kids at the wedding party busted it open with a big wooden bat for the candy inside, what fun!
I enjoyed that! I may try making one now. Do you just apply one layer of papier mache? And do you cover the hole at the top where you have added the gifts or just hang it up by the top section.

Holler,
We actually applied several layers on the parts we knew the kids would be swinging at. If you were making a pinata as an art project not to soon be busted up, one layer will work just fine.
We did cover the hole at the top after we had it filled and and rigged the wire bits to attach the rope for hanging.
Have fun! What are you thinking of making?
